It’s rare that an act doing a Las Vegas residency also has the #1 album in the country, not to mention a current Grammy nomination.  But those two things are definitely true about the Backstreet Boys, who returned to Las Vegas Wednesday night for the first of what will be their final series of shows at Planet Hollywood’s Zappos Theater.

Backstreet’s latest album, DNA, is their first #1 in nearly 20 years, and their single “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” is up for a Grammy this Sunday.  But those two milestones only happened after the Boys had major success in Sin City with their Larger than Life residency.  Backstreet’s AJ McLean gives their residency credit for reinvigorating the group’s career.

“It really has reminded people of the true legacy of Backstreet Boys,” he says of the show.

In addition, AJ tells ABC Radio, “I feel like we’ve gained a lot of new fans — fans that might’ve been a little on the fence, and now are like, ‘Oh, yeah! They had that song and then that song!’ and ‘Wow, these guys still look good, they still sound good, they’re still dancing…and they’re in their 40s!'”

The Boys will perform Larger than Life through February 23, and then will return in April for their last shows at Zappos.  After that, they’ll kick off a massive world tour in support of DNA.  And don’t worry — they’ll still be busting those moves every night.

“We definitely put some Ben-Gay on before the show and a little bit of Advil afterwards,” AJ laughs. “But we’re all performers, we’re hams. We’re gonna dance until we physically can’t do it anymore.”

The DNA World Tour kicks off May 11 in Lisbon, Portugal, and reaches North America July 12.
